CHRISTUS Health advances fight against breast cancer with new surgical technology

As part of its commitment to advancing accessible breast cancer care in Southeast Texas, CHRISTUS Health has acquired MOLLI, an innovative magnetic localization technology providing surgeons with a reliable, precise, wire-free method for locating non-detectable breast masses and breast cancers during surgery.
The technology provides patients with a wire-free alternative to traditional breast lesion localization. MOLLI uses a magnetic marker smaller than a grain of rice. It’s placed directly into a breast mass by a radiologist using ultrasound guidance days or weeks before surgery.
“MOLLI is a significant advancement in the way we approach breast surgery,” said Dr. Iumy Torres, general surgeon, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth. “It allows us to accurately locate areas of concern without having a wire extending outside of the breast, which can make the experience more comfortable and less stressful for patients. It also gives us an additional tool to help ensure we are removing the area we need to remove.”
During surgery, a pen-like detection device identifies the magnetic marker and provides the surgeon with audio and visual guidance to help locate and remove the targeted tissue. The system can also be used after the mass is removed to help assess surgical margins, potentially reducing the need for additional procedures.
“MOLLI changes the experience for both the patient and the surgical team,” Torres said. “We can localize the area ahead of time and then use the technology in the operating room to guide us directly to the target. It gives us precision while also helping make the process easier for our patients.”
CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth is currently the only hospital in Southeast Texas offering MOLLI technology.
Torres said the new technology is particularly beneficial for patients whose breast abnormalities are detected through screening mammograms or other imaging but cannot be felt during a physical examination.“Early detection is one of the most important tools we have in the fight against breast cancer,” said Torres. “When imaging identifies an area that needs to be removed, our goal is to provide patients with the most precise, comfortable and surgical experience possible. Having MOLLI available here in Southeast Texas gives our patients access to another advanced option close to home.”
