CHRISTUS Health becomes first in nation to use portable MRI inside operating room

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital continues to lead the way in advancing patient care through innovation, becoming the first hospital in the nation to employ the new V2 Swoop Portable MRI, utilizing the newest FDA cleared software inside an operating room during a pituitary tumor resection.
The groundbreaking procedure was performed by Dr. Todd Patrick, chief of neurosurgery, marking a significant milestone in surgical precision and patient-centered care.
By bringing advanced imaging directly into the operating room, the Swoop system allows surgeons to capture real-time images during procedures, improving decision-making, reducing the need for repeat imaging and enhancing overall surgical outcomes.
“This case represents an encouraging step forward in how we approach and execute complex neurosurgical care,” Patrick said. “The integration of a mobile MRI into the operating room is an exciting development and while it is still early, has the potential to enhance how we evaluate our work in real-time.”
In September 2025, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital was the first in the region to introduce Swoop MRI technology, expanding access to safe, bedside imaging. In January 2026, the hospital also became the first in the nation to use this newest advanced system on a NICU patient, further showcasing its ability to bring innovative care to even the most vulnerable populations.
The Swoop Portable MRI enhances patient safety and comfort by eliminating the need to transport critically ill or surgical patients for scans, streamlining care and minimizing risk.
Since its implementation, more than 200 adult patients in Tyler and more than 20 at CHRISTUS Health in Palestine have received bedside MRIs, many specifically to support the rapid diagnosis of stroke.
“While continued experience and study are essential, this technology shows real promise,” Patrick said. “I am optimistic about what the innovation means for the future of patient care.”
